GWALIOR
Gwalior, named after Gwalipa, a saint of the seventh century, is also remembered for the memory of the heroic queen, the Rani of Jhansi, and Tatya Tope who led the revolt against the British in 1857. It has an imposing fort which dominates the city and has a row of huge Jain statues on the route uphill. Gujarati Mahal, now a museum, was built by Raja Man Singh for his favourite queen, Mriganayani. Of interest are the Rani of Jhansi memorial and the tombs of Tansen, the famous musician in the Court of Akbar, and Mohammed Ghaus. The Ghaus tomb is a good specimen of early Moghul architecture.
